On Friday, we are looking at models of the essay that earned 1-9 from AP scoring. This will show you examples of what successful essays look like, and what to avoid.

If you were absent today, please look at the slides here. They will help you to prepare for your in-class essay tomorrow with practice and strategies.
If you were absent today, please check the slides and familiarize yourself with tone words (e.g., admiring, sarcastic, reflective, critical) so that you can use more than "positive" and "negative" to label tone. You will also make up the vocab quiz upon your return.
After analyzing 2 speeches, you wrote a speech imitating the style of 1, using rhetorical strategies to make an argument. Those speeches were presented in-class today; a few will also be presented tomorrow. To remind you of the requirements and expectations (grading rubric), you can see these slides.
If you were absent, you will make up the essay when you return. Once everyone has made up the essay who was absent, I will post the models, reflection questions, and suggestions for revision. Your essays will be returned to you by Tuesday. Revisions are due 10/6.

You should also finish reading and annotating the Wellesley Commencement Speech before Wednesday on your own.
Today we discussed the Gettysburg Address and talked about how specific devices helped to convey Lincoln's purpose, and how those strategies conveyed the purpose. See the slides that continue on yesterday's and the images below. P 5 annotations are HERE.
