If you were absent today, please look at the slides here and go to the Google Classroom. You should fill out the KWL chart, read some basic background information from the slides, and then closely read the excerpt from NIght in order to complete a SOAPSTone and identify rhetorical devices that make the passage so powerful. You can also check out the classes' questions that other students used their background knowledge to help answer.
Friday, students learn about a rhetorical precis, a method to organize analysis of a passage. At the end of class, students chose topics to research about the Holocaust, since our next rhetorical analysis project will be on Night by Elie Weisel. Please see the slides here if you missed school today, so you can practice writing a rhetorical precis, and so you can sign up for a topic for the research project. (Keep in mind, you might not get your first choice.)
Yesterday you read and annotated an excerpt from "I Have a Dream" by Martin Luther King Jr. Today we completed a SOAPSTone on it and had a discussion of what rhetorical appeals King used. I also announced important information about what's coming up next in class. If you were absent, please read the slides from today here, and get a copy of the excerpt from the red absent basket when you return.
If you missed class today, please see the slides here that will introduce some rhetorical devices, and be sure to pick up a copy of the rhetorical device list from the red basket when you return!
Today you peer reviewed a partner's "He for She" rhetorical analysis essay, then used your partner's comments on your essay to make some edits and revisions. The essay is due tonight if you did not already submit it to Turnitin.com.
Today students continued working on the "He for She" rhetorical analysis essay. Remember, it's due on Monday, so if you did not use your class time wisely or if you were just a little more thorough with taking your time, make sure to work on it a bit over the weekend!
After working on your graphic organizer for the essay yesterday, today everyone started to type their essay. If you were absent today due to illness, you can start working on the essay when you feel well. You already have all the materials you need - the "He for She" speech and graphic organizer. You can find the MLA template in the Google Classroom.
Here are the slides from today. If you were absent, please read them and pick up a graphic organizer to fill out. The organizer will help you prepare for our rhetorical analysis mini-essay on "He for She." Today we talked about expectations for the essay by looking at the rubric and example commentary, as well as reviewing what plagiarism is and how to avoid it by developing original thought.
Here are the slides from today. If you missed school today, please use the slides to answer the Initiating Question on your Socratic seminar participant form, and bring the form to me when you return.
