Today we are reading and annotating a text, then answering a few questions about it. If you were absent today you will start with this tomorrow. Make-ups will be next week.
Today we talked about writing body paragraphs and reviewed what needs to be in them by writing paragraphs together and then playing "Bluff-o-Rama." If you were absent today, it is very important that you read these slides, and you can also review the questions in Bluff-o-Rama.
Today I gave you feedback on your "Fish Cheeks" paragraph and then you did a stations activity to review how to write the best 2-chunk paragraph possible. You identified strong sentences and why those sentences were strong. The goal was for you to see examples of strong TS, CD, CM, and CS in order to reinforce your idea of how to write the best paragraph possible. Remember, your district assessment starts on Wednesday!
At the end of class, you checked out your copies of "To Kill a Mockingbird." We will start working with the novel next week, but if you would like to start reading now, you may do so. Now that you have practiced with a variety of skills related to writing a strong paragraph, it's time to turn in a final product that shows your skills! Paragraphs were due to Turnitin.com at the end of class.
Today, you wrote 2 sentences of commentary on the quote you chose yesterday, then chose another concrete detail from "Fish Cheeks" and wrote 2 sentences of commentary on that. Finally, you wrote a concluding sentence to wrap up the paragraph. Remember, everything should relate to your theme/topic sentence!!
Today we practiced with choosing the strongest evidence to support your claim/topic sentence (which, in this case, is your theme statement). We also practiced introducing the quote with context, and integrating quotes into a sentence neatly.
Here are the slides from today. Today, you got some feedback on your paragraph on "The Stolen Party" or "Thank You, Ma'am." You had a chance to look at the feedback, and what specific elements should be improved for your next paragraph. Our focus today was on writing a clear topic sentence (a theme statement) as the backbone or "road map" for what your paragraph would be about. After looking at various examples and practicing on Socrative with writing a theme statement, you wrote a theme statement about "Fish Cheeks" in Google Docs as the start of a paragraph that we will finish later. Your theme statement included: title of story, author name, theme statement, and 2 specific literary devices the author used. Here are the slides from today.
Today we had a Socratic seminar on "Fish Cheeks." If you were absent, your next Socratic seminar score will just count for double.
Yesterday, we had a surprise visit to the library for library orientation day. We will have our Socratic seminar about "Fish Cheeks" on Monday, so please review your annotations and foldable sometimes this weekend so that the story stays fresh in your mind. Have a great long weekend!
