If you were absent today, you were excused from the Socratic seminar. IF you were absent today (Friday), please read Ch. 21 and Ch. 22 of TKAM and answer the following questions on a piece of paper:
Ch. 21 -Do you think Calpurnia is right for wanting to shelter the children from the trial? Why do you think she wishes to do so? Would you wish to shelter your children from such a trial? -Why is Jem pleased that the jury is taking a long time to decide on the trial? What does that show about Maycomb, or at least the jury? -Was the verdict what you expected? Why or why not? -When Scout says it was like realizing Atticus had an empty gun, how does that connect to the trial? Ch. 22 -What does Atticus mean when he says “it’s just as much Maycomb County as missionary teas”? (Establish with your group first what you think “missionary teas” might be – think about the missions in Southern California and what a religious missionary does, and what religion most Southerners were in 1930s Alabama) -Based on context, what would you guess an appeal is? -Why is there so much food in Atticus’ kitchen after the trial? Why is this especially significant in 1930s Alabama? Please see slides 6-12 here to prepare for the Socratic Seminar tomorrow if you were absent today.
If you were absent today, please work on your Atticus essay at home. The final deadline is Wednesday at 11:59 pm. I will not accept it late.
