If you were absent on Thursday, please answer these discussion questions:
1. What three major events in Chapter Five break Kino’s ties with the town and make him an outsider? Do you think he could become part of the town again in the future? Why or why not? 2. Why does Juana follow Kino on his path of life even if she disagrees with some of his choices? Find a quote from the novel to help provide evidence of your thinking. Would you follow Kino if you were her? Why or Why not? 3. At the end of the chapter Kino says, “This pearl has become my soul.... If I give it up I shall lose my soul.” Thoroughly explain what he means. You should also work on your topic tracking chart, adding quotes from Ch. 5 to your chart.

Today you spent about half the period continuing to prepare for our mini-debate. If you were absent today, you will still write a paragraph justifying whether Kino should have destroyed the pearl, sold it to the dealers, or held onto it to get a higher price for it. You can finish the paragraph at home if you need to. See the slides here (#24-31).
If you were absent today, please read the slides (5-22) and write a RAFT to prepare for the debate. You should check the rubric, etc., so you know what my expectations are.
Today you answered some questions that will help you prepare for our discussion/debate on whether Kino should have destroyed the pearl. If you were absent today, please check out slides 1-4 on these slides.

Today you analyzed the connotation behind certain words Steinbeck chose to use to describe the doctor. If you were absent and still need to complete this, please see the slides here.
THURSDAY: Ch. 2 Discussion Questions 1) What importance does the canoe hold for Kino and his people? What is of similar importance to our society (think beyond a car.) 2) For what does Juana pray on page 15? Is she more religious or more superstitious? Use two examples of Juana’s actions from Chap. 1 and 2 to provide evidence for your opinion on the second question. 3) What two additional songs does Kino hear in this chapter? 4) What two similes describe the pearl Kino found? (p. 19) Absent today? Please see slides 5-23 here. Your group will tell you which topic you are tracking when you return, and you will begin tracking that topic as you read.
If you were absent or didn't get a chance to finish the discussion questions in class, check out today's slides.
