For a fun Friday today, we did some creative writing with a purpose: getting into the shoes of someone who might be different from us. After talking a little bit about the experiences of people who are "others," you did a RAFT narrative using rhetorical appeals, then we had some share-out time. Today we did a visual analysis of a map and of a photograph related to school segregation by using the OPTIC strategy. See the OPTIC slides here in this week's slides.
Today in class you worked on your body paragraph 2 & your conclusion of your written analysis of the 3 sources on school segregation. If you were absent today or just didn't finish today during class, you are encouraged to work on the essay at home. On Thurs/Fri, we are having a questions-based Socratic Seminar to practice for the upcoming common assessment. The discussion is also the basis for a writing prompt, which is practice for the common assessment as well. The writing prompt is::
Compare the strategies (rhetorical devices or rhetorical appeals) that 2 or 3 sources used to convey their message about segregation. Here are the slides again (look at the ones for discussion and writing) if you need help; all resources (graphic organizer, links to sources, sentence starters, and transition ideas) are in the Google Classroom if you need them. You should look at the Bill of Rights in the Google Classroom (normal version and the "plain English" version if you need it), then begin preparing for a role (your choice if you were absent) for the roleplay debate. If you have questions about what the debate entails, please re-read the instructional slides and then if you still have a question you can email me. This goes for 4/11 and 4/12 block schedule.
